Jessica Kelly
Visual Artist
Welcome
About me:
My name is Jessica Kelly, and I am a visual artist from Charlotte, North Carolina. My passion for the arts has been a defining aspect of my life since childhood. I spent my early years drawing and painting pictures of my favorite cartoons, and my love for art truly blossomed in pre-kindergarten, where arts and crafts were the highlight of my day. During this time, I created non-representational drawings, such as "Scribble Art," using line, shape, and color. This early exposure to abstract art led me to continue creating abstract paintings and optical illusions featuring the human figure.
As I grew older, I began to take my craft more seriously. I dedicated more time to creating art and decided to pursue my passion academically by attending North Carolina A&T State University, where I earned my B.A. in Media Design. After completing my undergraduate studies, I furthered my education at Howard University, obtaining my MFA in Fine Arts Painting.
During my time in graduate school, I focused on perfecting my craft and actively participated in art exhibitions, taught visual art, and created public art murals. These experiences allowed me to discover my identity as an artist and understand the positive impact art can have on the world. Through my art, I am able to tell stories, connect with my community, and record history through meaningful images.

“The wonderful thing about being an artist is that there is no end to creative expression. Painting is my life; my life is painting”
— Lois Mailou Jones
“You can't sit around and wait for somebody to say who you are. You need to write it and paint it and do it”
— Faith Ringgold
